Outdoor Exercises For The Whole Family

Apr 15th, 2011 Bill McNeil

Today it seems like our life consists of loading into the over sized family van to make a journey to the local greasy spoon to eat then on the way home stop at the store for the overweight in order to outfit not only ourselves but our children as well. The time has come for us to move from the couch to the lawn and make a habit of doing outdoor exercises with the family. We may not want to admit it to ourselves, but we know we need to do this.

Family Bide Rides

One great way to do this and have fun at the same time is through a family bike ride. The first thing to do is educate your children, or perhaps yourself first, about the rules of the road while biking. The basics for the children include knowing when to move over for cars, and more advanced safety tips for yourself like how to strap in a small child to a baby bike seat. Always ensure that the bikes as well as the bike helmets are the correct size for the person riding or wearing them. There are bike trails all over the place and most like there is one near you.

Fun Challenges For Your Whole Neighborhood

Another great way to stimulate these act door activities is by having a friendly competition to really motivate the family. Every week you could have small fitness competitions and keep track of the winners. Also before each competition you could have weigh ins to see who is losing the most weight. You can not only come together as a family and lose weight, but you can show those pompous neighbors who's boss.

Fun With A Backyard Obstacle Course

Another great way to have some fun with your kids while losing weight is to set up a Backyard Obstacle course. While setting one up it is important that your children are capable of doing them in a way that they won't be injured. You can do all sorts of obstacles such as a rope swing or putting tires on the ground like football players do. You can even have balance beams and timed hula hoops sections!

Playing Outdoors and Organized Sports

One great way to connect with your child and of course as I said before, lose some weight, you can take your child out to a place and just go wild with them. Be it silly things like snowball fight or even rolling down a a gently sloping hill. Getting out and staying active is important. Also another great is to get your child and even yourself involved in an organized sport. If you offer to help the team by either assisting in coaching or other tasks your child may be more willing to give it a shot.
