Traditional Hawaiian Dance Music: The Hula
Hawaii's rich culture includes many forms of artistic expression; one of these is the dance known to us as the Hula. The Hula is a functional dance form, which is not only lovely to look at, but whose graceful, flowing movements were meant to communicate Hawaiian mythology, genealogy and mysticism to its audience.
Much of Hawaii's music is spiritual in nature and incorporates chanting and traditional dance moves. Peter Manuel, a talented and well known composer and music author, is credited with being the principal unifying presence behind the music of the Polynesian islands, who did so by combining Hawaiian heritage with Polynesian and modern Hawaiian music to create a sound that is recognizable as uniquely Hawaiian, but also contemporary and fresh.
The traditional music also finds expression in the modern institutions of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra which was created in 1900 and, as the oldest organized orchestra in the Western US, has been active in preserving Hawaii's musical heritage. The orchestra is affiliated with other organizations such as the Hawaii Opera Theatre and the Oahu choral Society's Honolulu Symphony Chorus.
Hawaiian music revolves around simple, yet haunting melodies set to flowing rhythms that draw their inspiration from Hawaii's rich and colorful history, festivals, mythology, and spirituality. Its uncomplicated rhythm belies a rich and deeply poetic element that is unique to the music of the region. Though obviously influenced by American popular music, Hawaii has formed its own local music industry which produces a number of both traditional and more contemporary styles like hip-hop and pop. With the contribution of its popular steel string guitar, Hawaii made a major and lasting impact on American country music.
The cultural heritage of the Hawaiian people is preserved largely within the scope of their traditional music and dance, which, though not immune to the influences of a modern music market, has nevertheless retained its "Island Feel" through the incorporation of traditional hula movements and native chanting.
When you visit the Hawaiian islands it's good to listen to the traditional music and show your appreciation for the native culture and traditions. Watch and enjoy the music and don't be disrespectful by talking on a cell phone or chatting with someone else while the music is playing. You want to give the music and the musician your full attention. The culture and music is beautiful and it's an honor that you will be able to hear it.
